Werder Bremen-Cologne, Bundesliga: odds, predictions

by Mike

Werder Bremen-Cologne is a Bundesliga Week 5 match and is played on Saturday at 18:30: TV, line-ups, predictions.

Three points for Werder Bremen, barely one for Cologne. The season, for Ole Werner and Steffen Baumgart’s men, has not started in the best of ways. The one at the Weserstadion will therefore have the connotations of a postponement between disappointed teams, who in this Bundesliga 2023-24 could find themselves both fighting to keep their category.

Werder Bremen were unable to follow up their clear-cut victory over Mainz before the break with a resounding 4-0 annihilation. Last Sunday, in fact, the green-and-whites were wrecked in Heidenheim, giving the newly-promoted side, who had never played in the Bundesliga before this year, their first joy. Werner’s team had previously lost to Bayern Munich and Freiburg, conceding five goals in total and scoring none. There were actually five defeats if we also include the one in the German Cup last August, when Werder Bremen were knocked out by third division Viktoria Köln.

Friedl and his team-mates, just over a month after that match, will have to face another Cologne team, the more famous one.

The Billy Goats are going through a really tough time, from which they are struggling to recover. Last Saturday it was Hoffenheim who inflicted the third defeat in four matches on the red and white, closing all talks already after the first 50 minutes of the game (1-3). The classification is already poor, with the only point snatched in the away match in Frankfurt (1-1). In the dock is an attack that has produced only three goals and is currently, together with Mainz’s, the least prolific in the Bundesliga.

The Prediction

Three of the last four previous matches have ended in draws, and all of them 1-1. By contrast, the 7-1 victory of Cologne, who last March made mincemeat of the green-and-whites, is rather sensational. This, on the other hand, has all the air of being a balanced match, between two teams that will do everything to avoid a defeat that would worsen their respective situations. Another draw would not be a surprise, with both teams scoring.

The Werder Bremen v Koln line-ups

  • WERDER BREMA (3-1-4-2): Pavlenka; Pieper, Stark, Friedl; Groß; Weiser, Schmid, Stage, Jung; Kownacki, Ducksch.
  • COLONIA (4-2-3-1): Schwäbe; Schmitz, Hübers, Chabot, Paqarada; Ljubicic, Huseinbašić; Waldschmidt, Kainz, Maina; Selke.

POSSIBLE RESULT: 1-1
