Sinner different from “us Italians”: Gazette infuriates social media

by Mark

Sinner different from “us Italians.” A Gazzetta dello Sport article infuriates tennis fans on social. Controversy still unending

One can still hear the noise of the controversy of a month ago against Sinner’s decision not to respond to the national team’s summons for the Davis Cup, which instead from Thursday in Malaga will see him starring perhaps even in doubles. A noise planted especially by some articles in the Gazzetta dello Sport that sharply criticized Jannik’s choice. And now those controversies may continue.

An article also in the Gazzetta makes a point about what has been the moment of the blue tennis player, and highlights what good he has managed to do. Above all, they talk about how against a superman version of Djkovic nothing could really be done. But the crux of the matter is another: the nationalism of Sinner, who now, one reads, feels “one of ours.” An articulate speech from Giancarlo Dotto on patriotism in general and one that does not even hide what has been the social controversy over the releases of a month or so ago. “The disfiguring and often horrific outpouring of social has not only multiplied the background noise. It has also led to the ugly simplification of concepts, where it does not matter as much to articulate a thought as to materialize an enemy.” Yes, ears are ringing.

Sinner, controversy continues

It’s not all over, however, not least because on X a page that Sinner has nothing to do with but is a fan page of the blue tennis player, there was no shortage of controversy over this stance either. Especially over one passage that we quote below. At least the feeling is that it could be this.

“We have learned to love Jannik also because he does not belong to us to the very end. Because he does not look like us. Because of his being so different and so distant from our Latin soul, when he (doesn’t) exult, when he (maybe) gets depressed, when he (barely) smiles. When he speaks one language and perhaps thinks in another.” A lesson in nationalism, it seems, that went down well with no one. Nor do the joys of Turin week seem to be able to mitigate it. But you know, when one is strong one is strong and always enters the eye of the storm.
