Serie B Predictions March 15-16: the fight for second place heats up

by Sabrina

While in Sassuolo they’ve been calculating and counting for a while to see when they might mathematically be promoted, in Pisa they’re once again afraid that Spezia might overtake them after the Ligurians’ victory in the direct match a week ago at the “Picco”. The win against the Nerazzurri (3-2) allowed Luca D’Angelo’s team to move three points clear of the Tuscans, who in the last two months of the regular season will have to defend second place tooth and nail to keep the dream of Serie A alive.
Sassuolo, on the other hand, doesn’t have these problems. Fabio Grosso’s men have moved 9 points clear of Pisa despite having slowed down in the last three games (two draws and one win). The Neroverdi, with promotion now assured, travel to Cittadella this weekend to face a team that last Sunday was overwhelmed at home by Sudtirol (1-5), suffering their third defeat in less than a month. Veneti are +2 on the playout zone but risk being sucked back into the relegation battle: it will be difficult to react and start scoring points again against the steamroller of this championship that can’t wait to cross the finish line.

After two defeats in a row, Pippo Inzaghi’s Pisa has a good chance of bouncing back against a Mantova side that has only won once since the end of December – the Virgiliani have slipped to fourth from bottom – and have the third worst away record in the tournament. Spezia, on the other hand, will have to face a healthy Cesena: the Romagna team is unbeaten in 5 matches and hasn’t lost at home since December 26. However, the victory in the very close match against Pisa undoubtedly represents a significant boost for the Ligurians, who should be able to avoid defeat at the “Manuzzi” stadium.

The predictions for the other matches

In the playoff zone, Fabio Caserta’s Catanzaro took a few steps backwards, coming off the disappointing draw with Reggiana and above all the clear defeat in Cremona (4-0) against a direct competitor.

The Giallorossi can make up for it in the Calabrian derby against their cousins Cosenza, who are bottom of the table and without their top scorer Artistico (disqualified). Iemmello and his team mates are favorites, but watch out for the possible burst of pride of the Lupi, revived by the hard-won victory – their first in a month – against Reggiana. Juve Stabia, the big surprise of this championship, have lost momentum: the Wasps have only one point in the last three days, and are called upon to defend their seventh place against the difficult Modena team.

If the team from Campania makes a mistake, Bari, ninth after consecutive draws with Sampdoria and Sassuolo, could take advantage of the situation: Salernitana, second to last but reinvigorated by their victory over Modena, vital if they are to continue to believe in their salvation, are at the San Nicola stadium. Frosinone have also picked themselves up thanks to two victories against Mantova and Carrarese: the change of coach has had the desired effect and in the Ciociaria region the precariously placed Brescia will also have to be careful. A draw between Sudtirol and Carrarese, two teams that would be safe at the moment, but also at the Mapei Stadium between Reggiana and Sampdoria, both entangled in the fight not to be relegated and both coming off disappointing results.
