Group G is a group of five teams but, at the time of writing, we still don’t know the name of the team that will complete the group. It will be one of Spain or the Netherlands, currently engaged in the Nations League quarter-finals. In the meantime, however, the two teams that are aiming for (at least) second place have not been sitting around twiddling their thumbs: both Poland and Finland got off to a good start, beating the not-so-invincible Lithuania and Malta respectively. A goal from the eternal Lewandowski was enough for the Poles to get the better of the Baltic team (1-0).
A match essentially dominated by Michal Probierz’s men, who could have done better in terms of goals: Poland, in fact, only managed to break the deadlock with ten minutes to go thanks to an amazing play by the experienced Barcelona striker, who is experiencing a sort of second youth in Catalonia. Starting off with a win was what was needed to put behind them a nightmare autumn in the Nations League, which ended with the inevitable relegation to League B – Poland finished last in a group with Portugal, Croatia and Scotland – but against an easy opponent, the Lithuanian national team was expected to do better.
We’ll see if the red and whites can put in a more convincing performance against Malta, although they shouldn’t make the mistake of underestimating a team that was able to stand up to Finland. The Maltese, led by Emilio De Leo, a former assistant to the late Sinisa Mihajlovic, didn’t deserve to lose last Thursday. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous goal scoring opportunities (19 shots in total compared to 10 for the Finns), they were beaten by Antman’s goal (0-1).

Poland are unlikely to lose this match, but we believe that we may see a few more goals than in the match against Lithuania, also considering the many chances created by Malta against Finland.
