Peru-Bolivia prediction: a win to keep their hopes alive

by Michael

This is shaping up to be the last chance for Peru, who are desolately lying in last place in the South American qualifying group, with only 7 points gained in 12 games. The Bicolor’s hopes of taking part in the next World Cup are dwindling more and more, currently 6 points behind seventh place, which is the place that offers a pass to the inter-zone play-offs and which, coincidentally, is occupied by Bolivia, their next opponent.

Peru didn’t manage to make the most of playing at home, winning only once in six matches in front of their own fans, and above all they scored very few goals: only 3. These numbers cost the now former coach, Jorge Fossati, his job; he was removed from his post last November after the narrow defeat to Argentina (1-0). At the helm of the Peruvian team is now Oscar Ibanez, who has a real challenge ahead of him to lead the Bicolor to the North American World Cup in 2026. To keep their hopes alive, they absolutely must win their next game against Bolivia, who have never won in their last 10 away games in Peru. La Verde would currently qualify for the play-offs, but Venezuela are just one point behind them. On the other hand, they have four points to make up on sixth-placed Paraguay.

Oscar Villegas’ men had a magical moment between September and October, winning three games in a row, including a historic away win against Chile. But then they came back down to earth: a heavy 6-0 defeat against Argentina, an equally clear defeat in Ecuador (4-0) and a 2-2 draw at home against Paraguay. Villegas will not be able to count on the injured Chura and Henry Vaca but has called up some interesting young players, one above all Arroyo, owned by Shakhtar Donetsk. On the other hand, Ibanez is still relying on the veterans: in addition to Lapadula, the Peruvian coach has called up Advincula and Carrillo.

The prediction

The change in technical leadership should have the desired effect: Peru are slight favorites against a Bolivia that, away from high altitude, definitely struggle. We don’t expect more than two goals in total.
