Hungary-Montenegro is a match valid for the tenth day of Group G of Euro 2024 qualifiers and is played on Sunday at 3 p.m.: predictions.
Hungary in the last two days did not go beyond two draws with Lithuania and Bulgaria, the two selections that occupy respectively the penultimate and last place in Group G, but still managed to win direct qualification to Euro 2024 with one round in advance.
The officialdom came on Thursday, in the match in Sofia: the representative team led by Italian Marco Rossi only needed a point (2-2) to detach a pass for what will be its third consecutive European Championship, the second in a row since the Turin-born coach, in charge since 2018, has been on the bench. Hungary is still undefeated, but after its three wins with Lithuania and Serbia (beaten twice within a month) it has let up a bit, picking up only 2 points against the two less competitive teams. In Lithuania last October, it had to come back from a two-goal deficit after finishing 2-0 down in the first half, but something similar happened three days ago, and only an own goal by Bulgarian central Petkov in the midst of recovery – and with Hungary down 10 because of Kerkez’s expulsion – allowed the Magyars to avoid what would have been their first defeat.
On the final day, it’s back to Budapest, where Rossi’s men have so far been exclusively victorious (three out of three). Facing them will be a Montenegro still hoping.
While Hungary will have to worry about defending its lead from Serbia’s onslaught – all it needs is a draw to pass as first and have a less prohibitive draw – Jovetic and his teammates have no other results at their disposal than victory to continue dreaming of second place. Montenegro, however, despite the victory with Lithuania is not the master of its own destiny, as in addition to beating Hungary it has to hope that trailing Bulgaria will get the better of Serbia.
The prediction
Hungary must protect first place and redeem its two uninspiring performances with Lithuania and Bulgaria. It should therefore be able to avoid defeat to Montenegro, which, on the other hand, has no alternative but to win: both are likely to score.
