In the Eredivisie, the title race has incredibly reopened and, with two games to go, everything is up for grabs again. The missteps of leaders Ajax in recent games have allowed their only pursuers, PSV Eindhoven, to close the gap and move to within one point of the Amsterdam club, which until a few weeks ago seemed to have already secured the coveted Schaal, the shield traditionally awarded to the champions.
To secure what would be their 37th title in the Dutch top flight, the team led by Italian coach Francesco Farioli will have to sweat. Yes, it is still all in Ajax’s hands, masters of their own destiny, but to return to the Dutch throne after two seasons, the red and whites must not fail in their last two games against Groningen and Twente. Easier said than done, given that the Lancers have barely managed to pick up a single point in their last three games, suffering two heavy defeats at the hands of opponents who are far from unbeatable, namely Utrecht (4-0) and NEC (0-3).
