Freiburg v Bayern Munich, Bundesliga: odds, predictions

by Sabrina

Freiburg-Bayern Munich is a Bundesliga Week 27 match and is played on Saturday at 15:30: TV, line-ups, predictions.

Four days later it is Freiburg v Bayern Munich again. The first round, played on reversed pitches, saw Grifo and Co. triumph (1-2) in a surprise victory on Tuesday. Thanks to a penalty kick scored by striker Holer in the second half, they conquered the Allianz Arena and had the luxury of ousting the Bavarians from the German Cup, giving Thomas Tuchel his first disappointment.

An unexpected victory, which came in a comeback. And which allows Christian Streich’s men to qualify for the semi-finals of the national cup for the second year running. It will therefore not be Bayern Munich who will lift the DFB-Pokal trophy, which for the third season in a row will take a different route to Bavaria (the last holders being Borussia Dortmund and Leipzig). In any case, it was a profoundly different Bayern from the one that only a few days before had overwhelmingly won (4-2) the summit clash with Borussia Dortmund and had taken back the top spot in the league table with authority. The German Cup was not a primary objective, but the new coach realised the ‘amnesias’ that sporadically hit this team, which were the main cause of his predecessor Julian Nagelsmann’s exoneration, removed during the national team break.

Tuchel hunting for immediate revenge

For Freiburg, on the other hand, there was no better way to approach the league challenge: the Black Forest club must defend fourth place from the possible onslaught of Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt, who remain on their heels.

Streich’s side are coming from two consecutive draws with Mainz and Hertha Berlin, which prevented them from taking advantage of Leipzig’s continued missteps, still within touching distance of overtaking them. Bayern are back to looking down on everyone, but as Borussia Dortmund and Union Berlin take points off each other in their direct clash, they have the chance to stretch their rivals. Besides, of course, taking immediate revenge after the mocking cup defeat. Tuchel could rotate several players: on the horizon is the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals with Manchester City.

The prediction

Freiburg have won only one of their thirty-nine Bundesliga matches against Bayern Munich so far and are unlikely to overcome the Bavarians again in a matter of days. Tuchel’s team should have their revenge in a stadium that has only been violated once this season. A match with at least three goals in total is conceivable, two of which will be scored in the first half.
