Last night, in one of the first early games of this midweek Bundesliga round, Leipzig swept aside Schalke 04 and climbed momentarily to second place.
Both Freiburg and Eintracht Frankfurt, both on 30 points together with Union Berlin, were overtaken in one fell swoop. There is a lot of traffic, however, behind leading Bayern Munich and undisputed favourites for the title. And the feeling is that for the cup qualification this year there will be a struggle. Consequently, the most important match of the day is the one that will be staged in the Black Forest city, between two teams that in their first outing in 2023 have had completely different results. Freiburg’s nightmarish performance at home to Wolfsburg: Christian Streich’s side suffered their heaviest defeat of the season at the Volkswagen Arena since the defeat to Bayern Munich last October: a 6-0 defeat that could undermine the confidence of Grifo and his team-mates.
Eintracht on a high
The defence creaked as it did in the last away game – in November Freiburg lost 3-1 in Leipzig – and these numbers are in contrast to the first part of the season, in which the strength of the Bianconeri seemed to lie in the solidity of the rearguard.

Against Schalke 04, on the other hand, Eintracht Frankfurt’s winning streak continued as they have not lost in four matches. Oliver Glasner’s team appeared to be on the up and currently seems to be the only one, along with Rose’s Leipzig, that can create any apprehension for Bayern Munich, its next opponent at the weekend. Eintracht, who will take on Napoli in the Champions League in a month’s time, scrambled the derelict Gelsenkirchen club 3-0 on Saturday, confirming their excellent offensive averages.
The Prediction
A match to savour at the Europa-Park-Stadion. Freiburg wants to react after the Wolfsburg debacle but will probably have to do without their totem Grifo. Eintracht Frankfurt, on the other hand, can boast the second best away performance of the tournament behind the unreachable Bayern Munich and, in our opinion, will be able to take away at least a point from the challenge with the Bianconeri. Both are likely to score at least one goal apiece.
