England-Latvia prediction: Tuchel already preparing the escape

by Lea

Thomas Tuchel’s England “debut” was a winning and convincing one. The German coach, only the third “foreigner” to coach the Three Lions – the only other non-English coaches were Eriksson and Capello – immediately showed that he has a clear idea of what he wants: beating Albania 2-0 at Wembley on the first day of qualifying for the next World Cup, where England will inevitably be one of the main favorites.

Kane and his teammates came out to a standing ovation: regardless of the final result, Tuchel’s team shone in both halves of the pitch, constantly maintaining a proactive attitude, a sign of a clear break from Southgate’s management. Perhaps they could have scored a few more goals, but minimizing the risks at the back was also important. Albania, usually threatening on the counterattack, hardly ever shot on goal. Among the best on the pitch was Arsenal’s young left back Lewis-Skelly: a real factor on the left wing, the Gunners’ 2006 talent also scored the goal that broke the deadlock after 20 minutes of play. Then, in the second half, it was the irreproachable Kane who doubled the score, a real threat when it comes to World Cup or European Championship qualifiers.

England are now looking for confirmation against a team that on paper is even more easily beatable than Albania: Latvia. Before facing Serbia – the Balkan national team, currently playing in the Nations League, is the main threat in this group – the English are aiming for their second consecutive win. The Baltic adventure also began with a win: with a goal from Sits last Friday, Latvia beat Andorra (0-1), giving Italian coach Paolo Nicolato three important points.
