Bundesliga, two tricky away games for Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen both coming off Champions League commitments: predictions.
The elimination from the German Cup does not seem to have left an aftermath at Bayern Munich. After the knockout loss to Bayer Leverkusen in the nation’s second-largest competition, the Bavarians have resumed their path to what would be their 34th Bundesliga triumph without wavering. A week ago they disposed of Heidenheim, which they folded 4-2 at the Allianz Arena, thus keeping their pursuers at bay (at the moment the second in the standings, Eintracht Frankfurt, has six points less).
Vincent Kompany’s men have scored back-to-back goals in the Champions League as well: last Tuesday there was no history with Shakhtar Donetsk, annihilated 5-1 on the neutral pitch in Gelsenkirchen. The next goal for Muller and his teammates is to overcome the Mainz hurdle, a team that Bayern Munich has beaten four times in the last five previous matches, scoring 20 goals in total, moreover. A match, the one at the MEWA Arena, that should not hold any major surprises, even though the Nullfunfers before losing last Sunday at home to Wolfsburg at the end of a thrilling 4-3 were coming off five straight useful results in the league (including a home success with Borussia Dortmund). It would be no surprise, then, if the Bavarians failed to keep their goal unbeaten.
The predictions for the other matches
Bayer Leverkusen is also back from its Champions League commitment: the Aspirins in the week took some satisfaction from themselves, narrowly beating Inter Milan – hitherto unbeaten – at the BayArena.
A goal by Mukiele in the 90′ – always decisive in the dying minutes – gave three important points to Xabi Alonso’s men, who will now try to extend their winning streak (three wins in a row) in the league to try to get closer to leading Bayern Munich. Leverkusen, however, will have to watch out for Augsburg, a team that gives its best mainly at home (one defeat in seven games for the Bavarians).
The reigning champions cannot but be considered favorites, but we might see a match less obvious than expected, also considering the cup fatigues of the guests. A challenge between two teams in difficulty that between Union Berlin and Bochum: the capitols after a good start can no longer win but could break the fast against the last in the standings (just 2 points for Bochum). Borussia Monchengladbach, finally, has a good chance to get back to winning ways after the draw with Borussia Dortmund, since visiting the Fohlen will be the newly promoted Kiel, back from 4 defeats.
