Bundesliga, Bayer Leverkusen has arithmetically won the Schale but from fourth place down it’s still all to be decided: news and predictions.
While waiting to find out whether the Bundesliga will qualify four or five teams for the next Champions League – it will all depend on the Uefa ranking at the end of the season – the duel between Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund, who are vying for fourth place, becomes tighter every week.
Marco Rose’s Roten Bullen have the same points as the yellow-and-whites, 56, and since their exit from the Champions League by way of Real Madrid they have hardly stopped. In the last five days they have had four wins and a draw, showing that they have arrived at the climax of the season in great shape. Seven days ago they smashed three goals off Wolfsburg (3-0), while in the previous round they swept Freiburg (1-4). The winning streak could continue at home to Heidenheim: the newly promoted side has gone far beyond what was expected by saving itself with enormous anticipation. It is currently closer to the European zone than to the relegation zone and has been unbeaten for four days (complete with a historic win against Bayern Munich). In short, a certainly tricky away trip for a Leipzig side that is, however, in a position to make calculations if they want fourth place: let’s give Rose’s men confidence.
The predictions on the other matches
Everything remains to be decided even in the fight to avoid relegation. Only trailing Darmstadt gives the impression of being a goner: the newly promoted side has scraped together just 14 points and is far behind both third-last Mainz and direct salvation.
The Liliens have not even won since October and are unlikely to avoid defeat in Cologne, in a one-sided clash that promises to be a one-sided affair. The Billy Goats, fresh from the knockout at home to Bayern Munich, are second-to-last and absolutely cannot miss this match if they want to have even some chance of keeping their category. Much more balanced, on the other hand, is the salvation clash between Wolfsburg and Bochum, separated by only one point and also at risk of relegation. The green-and-whites have failed to turn things around even with the new coach (Hasenhuttl) but after 2 defeats in a row they should get a positive result in a match that promises goals. Potentially eventful challenge also between Hoffenheim and Borussia Monchengladbach, with Pellegrino Matarazzo’s men still in the running for a place in Europe.
