It may be true that what counts is the result, but it must not have been easy to be a wallflower and only be able to watch without “touching.” Matteo Berrettini in Malaga celebrated the Italian national team’s victory in the Davis Cup, but it is completely understandable that he had a bit of a bitter mouth.
He, the very one who seems to care most about the Italy jersey, was forced to forfeit the call-up because of the bloody injury that screwed up the second half of his season. The ankle no longer hurts, but the Roman preferred not to force the recovery time and the foot in order to avoid, precisely, that the problem degenerates and compromise, may it never be, even the beginning of the next one. A season of which he intends to be a protagonist at all levels, after a year characterized by far too many stop&go. As a singles player, of course, but also as a member of the Italian national team.
It must not have been easy, we said, to give up the joy of raising that coveted salad bowl to the sky. Berrettini, however, was “content” to make his own contribution from the bench, supporting and backing his teammates and thus making, at least to their ears, a difference. Now, however, it is time for the countdown. And may it never happen again.

“We want to repeat ourselves,” said the captain in reference to his desire to play an encore in the Davis Cup, “and this time do it with Matteo Berrettini as well. He also deserved to be with us on the podium to raise the trophy, as to appear in the official photos, but protocol did not allow it.” One way to “get around” protocol, however, there is. And it is one: to be there when the time for the team competition strikes again.
The Roman has already said he wants it more than anything else in the world, and there is someone else, too, for that matter, who wants to repeat with him. “He has helped us in every way,” Volandri added, referring to Berrettini, “and it was not easy for him, after such a difficult year, to stand by and watch others play, fight, suffer, rejoice. But he is a special guy, and even Jannik said he wants to win another one right away with him.” And you know when Sinner puts his mind to something.
