Berrettini, the whole truth about the Pietrangeli case: the former champion has decided to spill the beans, here’s what he said.
The video, which had immediately gone viral on social media, was practically put under the microscope. Social media users watched it over and over again to try, as far as possible, to decipher the lips of the two protagonists and thus find out what they had said to each other.
In the end, it seems that Nicola Pietrangeli, upon his arrival on the SuperTennis Awards stage, asked Matteo Berrettini something like, “And what are you doing here?” Hence, implying that he should not have been in that place, not having returned from a brilliant season and not having contributed actively to winning the Davis Cup. It is not certain that he said exactly that, but the Roman’s grimace, immediately after the 90-year-old from Tunis passed by, nevertheless makes it clear that the former tennis player did not say anything too kindly to him. It is therefore probable, highly probable, that the people on social media are right and that Pietrangeli did indeed utter those exact words.
Beyond what happened at last Monday’s grand gala, the unforgettable champion returned to the news a few hours ago with some new statements. Invited to the Capitol in Rome to receive the Euro Mediterranean International Award 2023, he spoke again about Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini.
Sinner and Berrettini, Pietrangeli backtracks
His was blatantly an attempt to correct his course. Although, according to many, it is too late: the omelet, by now, he has made it. The reference is to that time when he admitted that he was the best tennis player in the world and tried, as he carried on his feats, to belittle those of contemporary champions. Especially the South Tyrolean’s.
“Sinner? A phenomenon – Pietrangeli said in the Capitol – I don’t resent these players. There is also no need to be envious because Berrettini broke one of my records, after 61 years. I never said I was better than them.”
That may be, but the fact is that, for some time now, the fans seem to no longer have much sympathy for him. Least of all Sinnerists, especially after the former champion told Repubblica the following: “Sinner has done something exceptional – these are his words – and he is only 22 years old: so he has his whole life ahead of him. But to do what I did maybe it takes two, lifetimes. “
