At the top of the Group D standings, on the eve of the last day of the group stage, there is no Algeria, another big name in African soccer facing a resounding elimination. No, the summit at the moment is shared by outsiders Angola and Burkina Faso, both with 4 points. It follows that what will be staged in Yamoussoukro takes on the contours of a direct clash for the top spot.
Whoever comes out on top risks being overtaken by Algeria, which currently has two points less and which on the last day will face disastrous Mauritania, bottom of the table and still out of points. In the event of a draw, however, we will probably have three teams on five points, where the deciding factor as to who will go through as first and second will be the avulse ranking (much will depend on the goal difference by which Algeria manages to get the better of Mauritania). The best on the field, among the Palancas Negras, was Gelson Dala: the striker who plays for the Qatari club Al-Wakrah scored a brace.
Burkina Faso did not demerit, either: the Stallions, after a lackluster performance with Mauritania – beaten only in full recovery (1-0) thanks to a penalty kick converted by Traoré – came close to victory with Algeria (2-2). The recovery, this time, was fatal to them, as the North Africans found the equalizing goal in the 95′ minute.
The Prediction
Two of the most surprising (in a good way) selections of this group stage and who even in case of defeat could still have access to the round of 16 by being among the best thirds. There are all the ingredients for a balanced challenge in which both are likely to score on at least one occasion.
