As soon as Daniele De Rossi agreed to take on Spal, thus officially kick-starting his coaching career, many – especially among Roma fans – immediately thought of the Coppa Italia. Yes, because the Ferrara team, should they pass the round with Genoa and reach the round of 16, would meet Roma, the club to which the former midfielder, world champion with the national team in 2006 and unforgettable Giallorossi captain, is historically and sentimentally linked. In order to receive the embrace of the Olimpico, however, De Rossi will have to achieve half a feat, namely conquering a football stadium that is always very ‘inhospitable’ like the Marassi, beating a team that seems to have found the right rhythm in the last few days. Spal, in fact, will face a healthy Genoa, fresh from their victory in Cosenza (1-2), which came despite being numerically inferior due to Bani’s expulsion in the first half.
For Alexander Blessin’s men, the win in Calabria was their third success in their last four matches, a sign that their values – no one in Serie A has a squad as well equipped as Genoa’s on paper – are slowly coming to the fore. The Emilians, on the other hand, are struggling. Despite the ambitions of volcanic president Tacopina, Spal are two points above the relegation zone. Two Sundays ago they exonerated coach Venturato and entrusted themselves to debutant De Rossi. He made his debut on Saturday with a blank-net draw at home to Cittadella, despite playing with an extra man for the entire second half.

The two teams have already played each other in the current Serie B championship: on 1 October last, Genoa went through without any major problems in Ferrara, with a net 0-2. In the Coppa Italia there will probably be different motivations, but the Rossoblù remain the favourites to go through. They are also likely to keep their goal unbroken.
