Girona-Rayo Vallecano and Villarreal-Real Oviedo predictions: La Liga is back

by Thorsten

After the glory of two years ago, when it reached heights never before achieved in its history by qualifying for the Champions League Mallorca-Barcelona prediction: a 16-year drought

Barcelona literally dominated the last Spanish football season, winning everything there was to win and lifting two trophies, the Super Cup and the Copa del Rey, in front of their eternal rivals Real Madrid. In short, the Blaugrana didn’t leave even crumbs for the Blancos, who were forced to swallow dust in the league as well and settle for second place.

It would have been a perfect year had they won the Champions League: Barça were one step away from the final against PSG, but Inter threw a spanner in the works, eliminating the Catalans in a spectacular semi-final second leg at San Siro. Unlike the other big European clubs, Barcelona did not compete in the Club World Cup, which is perhaps a good thing for a team that was able to rest after a long and grueling season. Hansi Flick and his men begin their title defense in Mallorca: the squad is essentially the same as last year, with the only additions being Joan Garcia, a goalkeeper signed from Espanyol, and Rashford, who is in Catalonia to relaunch his career after a disappointing spell at Manchester United. After failing to sign Nico Williams, the German coach will give even more responsibility to Lamine Yamal, fresh from a million-dollar contract renewal and wearing the number 10 shirt: the talented Spaniard scored twice in the Gamper Trophy against Cesc Fabregas’ Como, who were crushed 5-0 last Sunday.

Mallorca is also coming off a good season: the Balearic club, led by Jagoba Arrasate, has long dreamed of Europe but ultimately finished in tenth place, which is still a respectable achievement. The Rossoneri ended their preseason with two wins: last Saturday, they beat Hamburg (2-0), a club that will be playing in the Bundesliga this year.

The prediction

Despite the heavy absence of Lewandowski, who is injured, Barcelona should start the season on the right foot. After all, the Blaugrana have not lost to Mallorca since 2009 and last year they ran riot in this stadium with a resounding 5-1 victory. However, it cannot be ruled out that the Rossoneri, who looked in good shape in their pre-season friendlies, will manage to score at least one goal.

Probable line-ups for Mallorca-Barcelona

MALLORCA (4-2-3-1): Roman; Morey, Valjent, Raillo, Mojica; Samu Costa, Morlanes; Asano, Darder, Pablo Torre; Muriqi. BARCELONA (4-2-3-1): Joan Garcia; Koundé, Cubarsì, Ronald Araujo, Balde; de Jong, Pedri; Yamal, Fermin Lopez, Raphinha; Rashford. POSSIBLE RESULT: 1-3 League, Girona is back down to earth. Last season, the Catalans fell back into the ranks, ending up fighting for survival in the top flight: they managed to stay up, finishing in 16th place, in a season that was also affected by the double weekly commitment, which they were not used to at all in these parts.

One of the architects of the Champions League dream, Michel, is still on the bench, but several players on loan have left Catalonia (Gutierrez is also close to joining Napoli). Girona is counting on the experience of Lemar and Witsel, both from Atletico Madrid, as well as the loans of Vitor Reis and Rincon (Manchester City and Athletic Bilbao). Michel and his men will open the 2025-26 La Liga season alongside Rayo Vallecano, who are looking to build on last season’s excellent eighth-place finish, which earned them a historic qualification for the Conference League. Two wins, one draw, and one defeat: that is the record of the Madrid side, still led by Inigo Perez, in their preseason friendlies. The main signing so far is former Lazio player Luiz Felipe, who spent last season at Marseille.

Prediction

Two teams still finding their feet, which are likely to produce a balanced and hard-fought contest. For now, Rayo look the more certain of the two: the Matagigantes should at least avoid defeat.

Probable line-ups for Girona-Rayo Vallecano

GIRONA (4-2-3-1): Gazzaniga; Arnau, D. Lopez, Krejci, Blind; Solis, Herrera; Tsygankov, Asprilla, J. Roca; Stuani.
RAYO VALLECANO (4-2-3-1): Batalla; Ratiu, Lejeune, Luiz Felipe, Chavarria; P. Ciss, Unai Lopez; Isi Palazon, Pedro Diaz, Alvaro; D. Frutos.

Odds comparison

Villarreal’s victory is priced at 1.35 on Lottomatica and Snai. A goal in Girona-Rayo Vallecano is priced at 1.80 on Goldbet and Lottomatica and 1.77 on Snai.
