Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad prediction: Ancelotti’s dream is still alive

by Michael

In Real Madrid’s glorious history, studded with every trophy imaginable, there is still room for new records. For example, despite having won 15 Champions League titles, Los Blancos have never achieved the classic Treble, i.e., winning the Champions League, La Liga, and the Copa del Rey in the same season, a feat that their arch-rivals Barcelona have achieved twice, in 2009 and 2015.

The ‘treble’ is therefore an idea that continues to tempt Carlo Ancelotti and his men, who are still fighting on all three fronts. In the league, Real Madrid remain hot on the heels of Barça: after their victory in the postponed match against Osasuna, the Blaugrana moved three points clear and had no trouble getting the better of their cousins Girona at the weekend, sweeping them aside 4-1, but the Merengues’ response was not long in coming.

Real Sociedad need a comeback

Thanks to an increasingly decisive and incisive Mbappé, who scored twice, the reigning European champions prevailed over Leganés on Saturday, albeit with some difficulty (3-2).

The Italian coach is also trying to pace his team, as they face another grueling schedule. Before facing Arsenal in the Champions League, Los Blancos will also be busy in the second leg of the national cup semifinal against Real Sociedad, whom they beat 1-0 in the first leg with a goal from Brazilian gem Endrick. The Basques are therefore forced to stage a sensational comeback: they need to win by at least two goals in a stadium that the Txuri-urdin have not won since 2020, in a Copa del Rey match. For Imanol’s men, this competition is perhaps the only way to give meaning to a season that has so far offered little. Real Sociedad returned to winning ways on Saturday against Real Valladolid (2-1) but are only tenth in the table, far from the positions that matter.

Imanol should field his best possible line-up at the Bernabeu, with the exception of the injured Brais Mendez. Ancelotti, on the other hand, has a very limited bench to choose from: Courtois, Mendy and Dani Ceballos are also unavailable, in addition to the long-term absentees Militao and Carvajal.

The prediction

For Imanol’s Real Sociedad, this is probably the last chance to try to secure a place in the next European cups. It will be very difficult to come back against a Real Madrid side that, despite not shining, always manages to get by thanks to the quality of its individual players, but it cannot be ruled out that this time the Basques will at least find the back of the net.

Probable line-ups for Real Madrid-Real Sociedad
