Salernitana-Frosinone match canceled: Serie B in chaos

by Mike

UPDATE: The first leg of the playout between Salernitana and Frosinone has been postponed following the referral (official since yesterday afternoon) of Brescia, which could face a penalty in the coming days. As a result, the final standings of the Serie B regular season would be rewritten.

Salernitana-Frosinone is a Serie B playout first leg match scheduled for Monday at 8:30 p.m.: statistics, news, probable lineups, predictions, live TV, and streaming.

One of Salernitana and Frosinone will take the so-called double backward somersault at the end of this heated doubleheader, sliding from Serie A to Serie C in the space of a single year. This is certainly not a new phenomenon in the second division, as in recent seasons there have been quite a few teams that have had to deal with a sensational double relegation (many of them narrowly avoiding it by saving themselves at the last minute).

Both teams have had a very disappointing season. Last summer, they were built to immediately regain the top flight or at least to remain stable at the top and at least reach the playoffs. None of that happened. Both the Granata and the Giallazzurri spent the last few months navigating the lower reaches of the table, living with the specter of direct relegation. Salernitana bounced back after yet another change on the bench and, with Pasquale Marino at the helm, secured a place in the playouts thanks to four wins in their last six regular season games: the 2-0 win in the head-to-head with Cittadella was crucial, allowing them to finish in fourth place. Frosinone also changed gear with their third coach this year, Paolo Bianco.

Double advantage for the Ciociari

For over two months, from February to April, the Giallazzurri remained unbeaten—ten games without defeat, with Frosinone under the new management scoring fewer points than only Sassuolo and Pisa—but it was not enough to secure direct salvation. Not even last Tuesday’s victory in Reggio Emilia against Sassuolo (0-1), with nothing left to play for after promotion to Serie A, was enough to avoid the dangerous play-outs.

Frosinone, having finished ahead of Salernitana (43 points to 42), will have a significant advantage over Marino’s side, as well as playing the second leg at home. If the two sides are level on aggregate after the two legs, the Ciociari will remain in Serie B thanks to their higher league finish. As for the probable line-ups, Marino is hoping to have Ferrari back in defense, while on the other side, Bianco has little chance of recovering the injured Marchizza and Tsadjout, who are out along with Darboe and Koutsoupias.

The prediction

The two previous matches this season, played in December and February respectively, ended in a 2-0 win for Frosinone in Ciociaria and a 1-1 draw at the Arechi (with the Giallazzurri finishing with nine men). Salernitana, eighth in terms of home form – the Granata have collected most of their points in front of their own fans – start as slight favorites in the first leg. The Campanians ended the regular season on a high and, thanks to the support of their fans, should come out on top in what is likely to be a tense and hard-fought match, meaning they won’t have to pull off a feat in Frosinone in the second leg.

Probable line-ups for Salernitana-Frosinone

SALERNITANA (3-4-2-1): Christensen; Ruggeri, Ferrari, Lochoshvili; Ghiglione, Caligara, Amatucci, Corazza; Hrustic, Tongya; Simy.
FROSINONE (3-5-2): Cerofolini; Monterisi, Lucioni, Bettella; J. Oyono, Vural, Bohinen, Kone, A. Oyono; Ambrosino, Partipilo.
