To quote José Mourinho, Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal will end the season with “zero titles.” The Gunners had gone all-in on the Champions League after throwing in the towel some time ago in the league in their head-to-head with Liverpool. However, PSG proved superior in the semi-final doubleheader, winning both in London and Paris (0-1 in the first leg and 2-1 in the second) and securing their place in the final in Munich.
It is a tremendous disappointment and a hard pill to swallow for the Londoners and their coach Arteta, who reached the penultimate stage of the competition after knocking out European champions Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.
However, this is not the time to stop and reflect on mistakes made: in the last three Premier League games, Arsenal, currently second in the table, must defend their Champions League place. In theory, the Gunners are not in danger of finishing outside the top five thanks to their six-point lead over sixth-placed Nottingham Forest, but qualification is not yet a mathematical certainty. At home, Arteta’s team had relaxed a little recently, deciding to focus exclusively on the cup: the last two results, a draw with Crystal Palace (2-2) and a home defeat to Bournemouth (1-2), should be seen in this light. The Basque coach is expecting a reaction at Anfield Road against a Liverpool side that has already been crowned English champions for two weeks: with the title in the bag, it is quite normal for motivation to wane, and last weekend’s defeat at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea (3-1) is not that surprising.

Prediction
Arsenal, unbeaten in their last five games against Liverpool, should be able to take at least a point away from Anfield Road. The Gunners, despite their low morale following their elimination from the Champions League, need to secure second place, and their greater motivation compared to the Reds, who are champions with four games to go, could make the difference. There should be no shortage of goals.
