Roma-Fiorentina prediction: the “curse” continues

by Michael

You have to go back to last December to find Roma’s last defeat in the league. It’s not that the Giallorossi have conceded many since then, even in other competitions: two in the Europa League against AZ Alkmaar and Athletic Bilbao (the latter decisive for their elimination) and one in the Coppa Italia against Milan. In Serie A, however, Claudio Ranieri is achieving a real masterpiece, especially considering the state the Lupa was in when the experienced Roman coach arrived last autumn.

Suffice it to say that no team in the major European leagues can boast such a long unbeaten streak (18 games without a loss). On Sunday, Roma also took the scalp of Inter, with Ranieri outmaneuvering his colleague Inzaghi with some clever tactical moves. A goal from Soulé, who has grown game after game and has been able to make the absence of the injured Dybala unnoticeable, decided the match at San Siro (0-1), giving the capital club their second win in a row. They have been sensational in the new year: in 2025, they have racked up an impressive 40 points in 16 games, boasting the best defense in Europe during the same period. In short, this Roma side has everything it needs to achieve its Champions League goal, sitting just two points behind fourth place.

In this round, Pellegrini and his teammates can derail Fiorentina, another team that is not yet completely out of the running for the European competition. The Viola, one point behind the Giallorossi, have won their last two league games against Cagliari and Empoli (1-2 and 2-1) despite the absence of their striker Kean, but they spent a lot of energy in the first leg of the Conference League semi-final against Isco and Antony’s Betis. In Andalusia, the Gigliati lost 2-1, keeping everything open ahead of the return leg.

Roma-Fiorentina: the latest news on the lineups

Ranieri is expected to stick with a 3-4-1-2 formation, with Pellegrini once again playing in the hole behind the strike duo of Dovbyk and Shomurodov. Soulé is favored over Saelemaekers on the left wing, with Angelino on the right, while Koné will start in the middle alongside either Cristante or Paredes. Dybala is the only player out: the Argentine playmaker has ended his season.

The Viola will be without captain Ranieri, who is suspended, but Dodô – who underwent surgery for appendicitis – and former Lazio player Cataldi, who was injured in Seville, will also be missing. Kean will start up front alongside Gudmundsson.

Prediction

Roma have a good chance to avenge their 5-1 defeat in the first leg – the lowest point of the season – and take all three points against a Fiorentina side that is tired and distracted by their double Conference League clash with Betis. The Viola, however, have not won at the Olimpico against the Giallorossi since 2018: Palladino’s team does not seem capable of keeping up with a healthy opponent that has not lost in the league since December. However, it cannot be ruled out that the Viola will manage to score at least one goal.

Probable line-ups for Roma-Fiorentina

ROMA (3-4-1-2): Svilar; Celik, Mancini, N’Dicka; Soulé, Koné, Cristante, Angelino; Pellegrini; Shomurodov, Dovbyk.
FIORENTINA (3-5-2): De Gea; Pongracic, Pablo Marì, Comuzzo; Folorunsho, Mandragora, Adli, Fagioli, Gosens; Gudmundsson, Kean.

POSSIBLE RESULT: 2-1
