Tottenham-Bodo/Glimt prediction: everything changes away from home

by Lea

Tottenham’s Premier League season is in danger of being their worst ever. With only four games left to play, the Spurs could set a sensational negative record: currently only sixteenth, with just 37 points from 34 games. And they are not fighting relegation only because the last three games have been a complete disaster (it is no coincidence that they are already certain to play in the Championship, the English second division, next year).

A crazy year, therefore, which could only be ‘saved’ by victory in the Europa League, a feat that would also allow Spurs to qualify for next season’s Champions League, a goal that is impossible to achieve through the Premier League. The two semi-finals against the surprising Norwegians of Bodo/Glimt are therefore the most important games for Ange Postecoglou’s men, who, to be fair, have somehow managed not to disappoint on the continental stage (Tottenham have always been considered among the favorites). Despite the usual ups and downs, the Londoners made the most of their technical superiority in the matches against AZ Alkmaar, who they beat 3-1 in London after losing the first leg in the Netherlands, and Eintracht Frankfurt, with the return leg in Germany (0-1) decided by a penalty converted by former Bournemouth striker Solanke.

Three players suspended for Bodo

At home, however, the crisis continues: on Sunday, Spurs suffered their third defeat in a row, being overwhelmed 5-1 by Liverpool, who, thanks to this resounding victory, have mathematically won the league.

Bodo, on the other hand, reached the semi-finals – a first for any Norwegian club – and wrote the most important page in its history. Having grown exponentially year after year with the same coach (Kjetil Knutsen) and despite some excellent transfers, the yellow and blacks have now become a force in European football. In the play-offs, they knocked out Twente, Olympiacos in the round of 16 and Lazio, one of the two best teams in the single round-robin phase, in the quarter-finals. Despite failing to avoid a third consecutive defeat in the Europa League, Saltnes and his teammates took the Biancocelesti to penalties, winning from the spot and silencing the Olimpico. In the Eliteserien, the Norwegian league, which started just a few weeks ago, Bodo is currently second in the standings behind Brann but with a game in hand compared to the leaders.

Knutsen will in any case be unable to field his best team in London: three players are suspended, namely Berg, Evjen, and Helmersen. Postecoglou, on the other hand, after rotating his squad in the Premier League, will rely on his regulars: the Australian coach’s hope is to recover captain Son at the last minute, whose presence remains in serious doubt.

Prediction

In the 12 games played so far in this Europa League, Tottenham have suffered only two defeats and have not lost in front of their home crowd in 19 games at European level. Despite their long-standing problems in the league, Spurs should win the first leg against Bodo/Glimt, who are much less effective and formidable away from the Arctic Circle, where they take advantage of the peculiarities of the artificial turf. However, we do not expect a one-sided match: the Norwegians are likely to score at least one goal in a game with more than two goals in total.
