Brighton-West Ham prediction: too much uncertainty in defense

by Mike

Until a month ago, Brighton was among the teams in contention for a European spot in the Premier League, but due to a disappointing April—just one point earned in the last four games—the Seagulls have derailed, slipping to tenth place in the standings. To be clear, the seventh-placed team now has nine points more than Fabian Hurzeler’s men, who may have resigned themselves to a season finale in which it will not be easy to find the right motivation.

The young German coach, in any case, can be satisfied with how things have gone: it was not easy to take over from Roberto De Zerbi, but the former St. Pauli coach has managed, on the whole, not to make his Italian colleague regret his departure. With him at the helm, Brighton has continued to express a proactive and modern philosophy—albeit with some differences from De Zerbi—despite often lacking balance (as evidenced by the fact that the Seagulls have the worst defense in the top 10 with 53 goals conceded).

In fact, there is too much “dancing” at the back: Brighton have not kept a clean sheet since February and have conceded at least two goals in each of their last five games, including last Saturday’s 4-2 defeat to Brentford. West Ham are also coming to the end of a season to forget: the Hammers, often hampered by injuries, have collected only 36 points. Yes, it’s true, there was never any risk of finishing in the relegation zone, but expectations last summer were very different. The turnaround did not come with new coach Graham Potter either: the London side has not won since March, alternating between draws and defeats. Ahead of a likely summer ‘revolution’, the former Chelsea coach will try to improve the Hammers’ record, which is currently only better than the bottom three.

Odds comparison

Prediction

Despite a few too many absences – Veltman, Igor, Webster, Kadioglu, Lamptey and Milner are all out injured, while Joao Pedro is suspended – Brighton start as slight favorites in this match. However, our choice falls on “Goal” and “Over 2.5,” as West Ham is also a team that struggles to keep a clean sheet. We predict at least one goal per side and more than two in total.
