St. Étienne-PSG prediction, title one step away: all the combinations

by Mark

Unbelievable but true: there is a possibility, not even that remote, that PSG could become French champions as early as the end of this weekend. If Luis Enrique’s team – currently 19 points ahead of the second placed team – were to beat Saint-Etienne and at the same time Marseille were to lose to Reims and the derby between Monaco and Nice ended in a draw, then the celebrations for yet another title, the fourth in a row and the thirteenth in the club’s history (no one else has won so many in France), could begin in the French capital.

But even if this series of combinations doesn’t happen, the math will most likely come out the following weekend. The championship victory this year has never been in doubt, as has the overwhelming power of PSG who, even after changing their “policy” and choosing to no longer be a jumble of stars or champions in decline, continue to have no rivals at home. Instead, they have created an interesting technical project based on a very specific identity and playing philosophy (and above all on young talent). In any case, Luis Enrique will try to wrap things up as soon as possible so he can dedicate himself to the objective that PSG owner Nasser Al-Khelaifi has been pursuing for more than a decade: the Champions League. After eliminating Liverpool, the Parisians have become one of the potential outsiders (the first leg of the quarter-final against Aston Villa is scheduled for April 9).

PSG still unbeaten in Ligue 1

Before the break, PSG had easily beaten Marseille (3-1) at the Parc des Princes, thus remaining unbeaten in Ligue 1 (21 wins and 5 draws).

Saint-Etienne, on the other hand, are in serious danger of being relegated, less than a year after gaining promotion. They haven’t won a game since January 4th: in the 8 matches since then Les Verts have taken home only 4 points, dropping to second-to-last place, one point from safety. Two weeks ago it seemed that the drought was about to end, but the match against bottom club Montpellier was suspended halfway through the second half due to smoke bombs thrown by the fans, with Eirik Horneland’s men leading 2-0.

The prediction

In the first leg last January, Saint-Etienne only avoided a thrashing thanks to the many mistakes made by the PSG forwards in front of goal, and the team “only” won 2-1 despite an Expected Goals figure of 4.07. This time we expect a more convincing victory from the Parisians, who are ready to lay waste to the second most attacked defense in the tournament: at least 4 goals in total.

ST. ETIENNE (4-3-3): Larsonneur; Maçon, Batubinsika, Abdelhamid, Pétrot; Moueffek, Ekwah, Bouchouari; Cardona, Stassin, Davitashvili.
PSG (4-3-3): Donnarumma; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Nuno Mendes; Zaïre-Emery, Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz; Barcola, Dembélé, Kvaratskhelia.

POSSIBLE RESULT: 1-3
