Serie B Predictions March 8-9: Third party benefits from two quarreling parties

by Lea

After their win against Pisa, the countdown has begun: it’s now only a matter of time before Sassuolo return to Serie A. It’s true that the regular season is still long – there are ten games left – but the Neroverdi have built up such a lead over the third-placed team, Spezia, that they can sleep soundly. The Ligurians are 15 points behind and the gap could continue to widen this weekend, as the Emiliani will be able to take advantage of the direct clash between Spezia and Pisa to extend it even further.

Fabio Grosso’s team will play at home again, this time against Bari. The “Galletti” are very solid and are trying to cling on to the playoff train – they currently have the same number of points as eighth-placed Palermo – and they haven’t lost in three games, but it won’t be easy to keep Sassuolo at bay. Sassuolo are on fire and want to reach their goal as quickly as possible: It seems like an eternity ago since last August, when Bari managed to avoid defeat (1-1) at the San Nicola against the Neroverdi. There is no clear favorite, however, in the expected big match at the “Picco” stadium, which is a match that has always been very much felt by the two fan bases: a moment of decline for the hosts, who haven’t won in four days; Pisa, on the other hand, wants to react immediately to forget the narrow defeat at the Mapei Stadium. A possible success for the Nerazzurri would be a sort of mortgage on the A league: in case of victory, Pippo Inzaghi’s men would go to +9 on the only team, Spezia, which could threaten them in the race for second place and therefore for direct promotion. In any case, both teams would have to score at least once.

The predictions for the other matches

Frosinone seem to have regained confidence after the change on the bench: last Saturday they won again – something that hadn’t happened since December – and in the direct match against Carrarese they have the chance to leave the relegation zone. The Apuani, however, have put their difficult moment behind them thanks to their victory against Salernitana and two spectacular draws against Reggiana and Cremonese (2-2) and they will fight tooth and nail.

Balance too in Sampdoria-Palermo, a match between two famous teams that have disappointed in the first part of the season. The Blucerchiati are still embroiled in the fight to avoid relegation, while the Rosanero, led by newcomer Pohjanpalo, are finding consistency. The Sicilians are slight favorites after their two wins against Brescia and Cosenza, but winning at the Marassi stadium is never easy.

Stopped a week ago by Reggiana, Catanzaro will do its best to protect fourth place and avoid being overtaken by Cremonese: a “goal” game at the Zini stadium. Juve Stabia, another team in the playoff zone, have lost two matches in a row: the away match against Mantova, who have fallen back into the relegation zone, hides many dangers. Salernitana, always second to last, are still unable to recover: against a solid Modena, Roberto Breda’s men will probably struggle. Finally, we don’t expect a great spectacle in the matches between Brescia and Cesena and between Cittadella and Sudtirol: the Romagnoli, in splendid form, dream of a big win in Lombardy, while the challenge between the Veneti and the Altoatesini is a delicate battle for survival.
