The race for the Bundesliga title should no longer hold any surprises or plot twists. Bayern Munich shows no signs of weakening and the feeling is that Bayer Leverkusen, the only team that could still try to trouble the Bavarians and challenge their leadership, missed one of the last available opportunities in the direct clash on February 15th, when they could only draw at the BayArena.
After the last day of the championship, Vincent Kompany’s men maintained their 8-point lead over the Meisterschale holders: things didn’t go well in the away game in Stuttgart, but once they had gotten the measure of the Swabians, Bayern Munich managed to come back without any problems (1-3), following up the 4-0 thrashing they gave Eintracht Frankfurt seven days earlier.
Another “blow” for Bayer Leverkusen, especially from a psychological point of view, was the crushing defeat suffered last Wednesday in the first leg of the Champions League round of sixteen, in which Xabi Alonso’s team was overwhelmed 3-0 by the Bavarians in the first round of the German Euroderby. This result allowed Bayern Munich to qualify for the second round: Kompany will therefore be able to save his energy for the league match against Bochum, third from bottom in the table. Already beaten 5-0 in the first leg, Dieter Hecking’s men, although they have improved compared to a round ago, will not be able to limit the damage at the Allianz Arena. The Aspirins, on the other hand, will have to pull themselves together immediately after the “punch” they received in the cup: a Werder Bremen in the doldrums – 4 defeats in a row for the green-and-whites – will hardly put up any resistance in the face of their desire for redemption. However, it cannot be ruled out that Werder will score at least one goal against a very likely dazed Bayer.
The predictions for the other matches
This week Borussia Dortmund were also protagonists in the Champions League, where they were caught by a tough Lille team (1-1). In the return leg, in France, the black and yelow team will have to win.
In the Bundesliga, however, Niko Kovac’s team seems to have found a certain rhythm thanks to two consecutive wins against St. Pauli and Union Berlin, in which they scored a total of 8 goals without conceding any. In order to at least get back into the European zone, Borussia Dortmund, currently in tenth place, can’t afford any more mistakes: they absolutely need the three points against Augsburg, who are unbeaten in eight games. After barely earning a point in the last three days, Stuttgart must also get back on track, as they are another team at risk of missing out on a European place: at second-to-last Kiel, a win is within reach of Sebastian Hoeness’s men. Finally, Wolfsburg are favorites, but not by much: St. Pauli will not give up easily in the Volkswagen Arena match.
