Newcastle-Brighton prediction: goals expected even without the gunner

by Michael

In the midst of the race for Europe in the league, Newcastle is not snubbing the domestic cups either. In the FA Cup, the Magpies want to replicate the run they made in the League Cup, a competition in which they will have a chance to play in the final, scheduled for Wembley against Liverpool on March 16, and lift the trophy (an event that has not occurred since way back in 1955).

In the most prestigious cup, on the other hand, the Bianconeri have played only two matches, both against lower-ranked teams. First Bromley, downed 3-1, then Birmingham, eliminated following a pyrotechnic 3-2. To reach the quarterfinals this time they will have to get the better of a Premier League team, Brighton, which in the previous round took the scalp of top-ranked Chelsea (2-1). The Seagulls, too, thanks to their three wins in a row in the league (the last one came this week against Bournemouth, folded 2-1 at the Amex Stadium), are part of that large group of teams that can aspire to a European slot: last Tuesday, after their success with the Rossoneri, Fabian Hurzeler’s men climbed to eighth place in the standings, bringing them, as it happens, to -1 from Newcastle. In the midweek round, on the other hand, the Magpies were unable to avoid defeat at Anfield (2-0) against top-ranked Liverpool in the appetizer of the League Cup final: Szoboszlai and Mac Allister inflicted the second external defeat in a row on Eddie Howe’s team.

Newcastle will undoubtedly field a competitive lineup but the absence of striker Isak, who also missed Arne Slot’s match with the Reds, stands out. Little turnover for Hurzeler as well: the young Swiss coach could repropose the same eleven that faced Bournemouth.

The Prediction

St James’ Park is always a difficult stadium to conquer but watch out for Brighton’s positive momentum. Most likely the Seagulls will have their say in this challenge, which could drag on even after the 90 regulations. We expect at least one goal on each side unlike what happened in October in the Premier League (0-1 for Brighton).
