One of the most in-form teams in this Serie B is undoubtedly Catanzaro, fresh off two wins in a row and unbeaten since December 21 (nine consecutive games). No one, last summer, could have imagined that the Calabrians would be able to repeat the excellent things they showed in the previous season when, in spite of their status as a newly promoted team, they managed to get within a step of the playoff final while also expressing beautiful soccer.
Fabio Caserta, on the other hand, is not making his predecessor Vivarini regret it: after 27 days the Giallorossi are fourth in the standings, on 42 points. In the last round they took the scalp of Spezia, inflicting on the Ligurians their first home defeat and keeping their goal inviolate for the second time in a row.
Gone is the era of so-called “pareggite,” Catanzaro has changed pace: four successes in the last five for a team that has cashed in only three defeats, on par with Sassuolo and Spezia. The goal of Iemmello and his teammates, now, is to consolidate fourth place: the boost of the “Ceravolo” is likely to be decisive against Reggiana, which, on the other hand, continues to limp along and sees the playout zone dangerously approaching. In 2025 William Viali’s granata have beaten only Palermo and in their last two outings have not gone beyond two draws with Frosinone and Carrarese, two direct competitors for salvation. In Calabria, against a healthy Catanzaro, it will be complicated to take away points but, as the recent defensive performances of the Calabrians show, scoring goals will not be easy either.
The predictions on the other matches
As they hunt for confirmation, Alessio Dionisi’s Palermo, which returned to victory a week ago against Cosenza. The Sicilians, dragged by ex-Venice Pohjanpalo – in Calabria the Finnish bomber scratched again – will try to unlock themselves also at the “Barbera,” where the last success dates back more than a month ago. To try to hook the eighth position, the rosanero will have to beat Brescia, which after winning only 2 points in the last three days runs the serious risk of slipping into the playout zone.
The Rondinelle have also stopped scoring: 0 goals in the last 270 minutes. Will they reverse the trend in Sicily? Not necessarily, although the Rosanero’s defense is far from airtight. Ready to take advantage of any Palermo misstep is Paolo Mandelli’s Modena. After the fine win in Cittadella, the Emilians should repeat themselves with a now resigned Cosenza, which in the week exonerated Massimiliano Alvini and relied on Primavera coach Belmonte: the move of desperation for the Rossoblù, who are increasingly last (five defeats in the last six). Finally, a balanced match looms at the San Nicola between Bari and Sampdoria: the Galletti are stable in the playoff zone (seventh place) but cannot afford to underestimate the Blucerchiati, hungry for points to move away from the red zone.
