Chelsea-West Ham prediction: horror defense to the rescue

by Mark

Only one win in the last six league games for Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea, who seem to have lost momentum between the old and the new year compared to last fall. From mid-December onwards, the Blues have only beaten Morecambe in the FA Cup and Wolverhampton in the Premier League. A week ago they let Manchester City come back against them, despite having opened the scoring through Madueke in the 3rd minute of the first half: the game ended 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

In addition to progressively moving away from the top, in the last month and a half Chelsea have also slipped out of the top four, overtaken by Manchester City and Newcastle, who at the time of writing have one point more. However, Maresca’s team, despite their recent results, are still in the running for what was set at the beginning of the season as their main objective, that is to say, qualifying for the next Champions League. The Blues will be the last team to take the field in this round, knowing the results of their direct competitors: at Stamford Bridge, the derby is scheduled, a game that is quite important for both sets of fans, against West Ham, managed by former Graham Potter, a coach who only managed Chelsea for seven months in the 2022-23 season, without leaving his mark.

The Hammers are fresh from a good draw with Aston Villa in Birmingham (1-1), but the previous day they had lost at home to Crystal Palace: in short, Potter has not yet managed to turn things around as the fans expected after the dismissal of Julen Lopetegui. West Ham are currently a long way from the Europa League zone and the risk of a mediocre season is gradually becoming more and more concrete.

The prediction

It’s not been an easy time for Chelsea after the fireworks a few months ago, but the Blues, despite their lack of results, should be able to turn the page against a West Ham side struggling with serious defensive problems and who have conceded a whopping 14 goals in the last 5 Premier League games. At least three goals in total at Stamford Bridge.

The probable line-ups for Chelsea-West Ham

CHELSEA (4-2-3-1): Jorgensen; James, Chalobah, Colwill, Cucurella; Enzo Fernandez, Caicedo; Madueke, Palmer, Sancho; Jackson.
WEST HAM (3-4-2-1): Fabianski; Mavropanos, Kilman, Cresswell; Wan-Bissaka, Soucek, Alvarez, Emerson Palmieri; Carlos Soler, Kudus; Paquetà.

POSSIBLE RESULT: 3-1
