Bundesliga predictions Feb. 8: direct clash for Europe and more

by Mark

One of the most interesting and potentially compelling challenges in this round of the Bundesliga is the direct clash for Europe between Borussia Dortmund and Stuttgart, which will also coincide with Niko Kovac’s official debut on the Yellow and Black bench. The former Bayern Munich coach’s goal is to bring the vice continental champions back to the top after an extremely disappointing first part of the season – at least at home – that cost his predecessor Nuri Sahin his exoneration.

Borussia Dortmund after 20 league days is even 11th but thanks to the very short standings – the gap to the fourth, Leipzig, is currently only 4 points – getting closer to the noble zones is still possible. Ferryman Mike Tullberg’s interregnum, meanwhile, ended with two victories, the first in the Champions League with Shakhtar Donetsk and the second in the league against Heidenheim. However, the yellow-and-whites are failing to improve in non-possession of the ball: their last clean sheet was in November. The match with Stuttgart, fresh from qualifying for the German Cup semifinals – in the week the Swabians won 1-0 over Augsburg – also looms eventful, and they should score at least one goal at Signal Iduna Park (last violated last April): therefore, there is unlikely to be a shortage of goals.

The predictions on the other matches

Bayer Leverkusen is also back from their domestic cup engagement. The defending champions cannot lift their foot off the accelerator if they want to keep the title race alive and prevent leading Bayern Munich from running away. The Wolfsburg trip is tough and harbors several pitfalls but the Aspirins should come out on top, taking advantage of the drop the Wolves have had in the last three days, in which they have barely scored two points.

Freiburg a week ago returned to winning ways after three straight defeats, beating Bochum 1-0. It was certainly a healthy win for Grifo and his teammates, who have a chance to extend the winning streak against Heidenheim, which is third-last and three rounds shy of points. There is no clear favorite, on the other hand, in the direct clash between Hoffenheim and Union Berlin, both fighting not to be relegated: better, in any case, is the Sinsheim club, as the Capitols have not collected points on the road since October. Also promising balance is the challenge between Mainz and Augsburg: Bo Henriksen’s men are sixth, in the middle of the European zone, but have slowed down in the last four days, picking up three defeats. They do not start off beaten, in short, the Bavarians, fresh from a narrow defeat in the German Cup with Stuttgart.
