Jannik Sinner, in the letter to the Atp is all the concern of the Azzurri fans.
Since last summer, since, that is, the news of Jannik Sinner’s doping positivity circulated, a hellish period has begun for the Italian champion. It was obvious that it would be talked about, and massively so – he is still world No. 1 – but perhaps he himself did not expect so many tennis players to attack him.
Not everyone, however, was soft on him. Not everyone believed that that infinitesimal dose of Clostebol found in his system was not taken intentionally, but was an unintentional contamination. And to no avail were even the efforts made to prove who had done wrong and in what way: many still condemned him without ifs and buts.
One among them is Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios, who has been on a full-fledged crusade against the world number 1 for months now. He has written and said it in every sauce, but he is evidently not yet fed up with slinging mud at Sinner and insinuating that he has deliberately doped and achieved certain milestones thanks to certain substances. As well as belittling the significance of the Itia ruling, which cleared him of all charges by claiming Jannik’s sincerity.
Hands off Sinner: they put it in black and white
The fact remains that, as soon as the opportunity presents itself, Kyrgios is scrambling to discredit the blue champion in every possible and imaginable way. And this attitude, now, is absolutely no longer sitting well with the Italian fans, who in the past few hours have made an unexpected move.
They have written to the Atp, more specifically to Gaudenzi, in the hope that he can take action on the matter and prevent the Canberra tennis player from continuing to turn on Sinner: With this appeal, sportsmen and women who follow and love tennis played, cheering in accordance with the rules and fair competition,” it reads, ”ask the Atp Tour to take a formal and substantive position against the continuous attacks, defamation and incitement to hatred externalized by Nick Kyrgios against some colleagues.”
“We are disgusted, outraged and concerned,” it goes on to say, ”by the unrepeatable expressions that Nick Kyrgios expresses, even in remembrance of violent acts that have already occurred at the hands of hate-fueled fanatics. There cannot but be a code of conduct within the circuit to protect players from such abuse, and in fact Article 8.03 says that a clear responsibility of the Atp to the players and, more importantly, to the intended audience, for whom it must be a point of reference. Now whatever future action comes out of that will shape who you are as an institution.” Clearer than that, in short, you just couldn’t.
