Berrettini and Sinner, what a passion: he did it for real.
Jannik Sinner is the phenomenon of the moment. The Italian tennis player who has given the most excitement and satisfaction to the fans of the Bel Paese. And it may be true that Matteo Berrettini has not reached the same milestones as him, but he certainly cannot be said to be less than that, on the contrary. Rather, the Roman deserves the credit for having led the way for his successors, for having in a way “prepared” the Italian public for the even better things that came after his landing in the Wimbledon final.
Not that those who were there before them did little, mind you. The predecessors of the two blue champions were just as great and their feats, that’s for sure, have been etched in stone. Among them, those of Nicola Pietrangeli, a historic tennis player, now 91 years old, who set the seal on two Grand Slam tournaments and many other extremely significant victories.
He has not played for a while now, of course, but the thread that binds him to the sport that made him famous has never been broken. The Tunisian champion is always ready, indeed, to talk about the exploits of his successors, whether critically or otherwise. He follows them with great abnegation, and how much he admires them is shown by the fact that, in the past few days, he spoke about them in a rather unusual context.
He is always thinking about them, even in the hospital
Before the weekend, Pietrangeli accidentally fell. Following the “accident,” he was admitted to the Uoc of Orthopedics and Traumatology at Policlinico Gemelli. There he underwent surgery to reduce and synthesize the fracture in his right hip.
The perfectly successful surgery was conducted by Professor Giulio Maccauro’s team, and following it, the former tennis player began a post-operative course. He will have to stay in the orthopedic department for a few days, after which he can begin a rehabilitation course. It seems, in any case, that Pietrangeli is fairly well. So much so that, even in the hospital, he has carved out a space to talk about his great love.
Word came from the Polyclinic that in the hospital he had a long and animated discussion with the medical staff about Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini. Proof that the two boys are always in his thoughts and that there is no moment when Pietrangeli disconnects from his passion for tennis.
