Berrettini, unbelievable but true: he is ranked 13th.
It may not be official, it’s true, but that takes nothing away from him in terms of authority and reliability. Indeed, there are many who think that the Elo system, a ranking parallel to the Atp ranking, may be even more truthful than the calculation system based on games lost, games won, points discarded and points earned.
This unofficial ranking, in fact, takes into account the value of the opponents faced by tennis players over the course of the season and not just their respective tournament placings, which is why it takes an extremely accurate snapshot of the exploits of the athletes who populate the circuit. At this point, therefore, it is interesting to delve into the meanders of the Elo ranking and find out how, according to this alternative calculation system to that of the Atp, the season on which the curtain has now definitively fallen has gone.
Of course, but somewhat to be expected given the objective extraordinariness of his feats, it does not challenge Jannik Sinner’s crown. The azure also towers at the top of this computerized ranking, within which he collected 2309.3 points, compared to the 11mia 830 with which he ended, instead, the Atp-tagged year.
Berrettini surprise: from 34th to 13th place in the ranking in a flash
There are many surprises, however, in spite of Sinner’s confirmation as the undisputed king of the circuit, in the calculation estimated by this algorithm, which also takes into account, among other things, the level of severity of a given defeat, as well as the value of the rival against whom a match was eventually won
In this ranking, Carlos Alcaraz, for example, is second, about 200 points behind his enemy/friend of South Tyrolean descent. In contrast, the real world No. 2 is fourth in Elo, while Serbia’s Novak Djokovic is even seventh. Daniil Medvedev, oddly enough, is fifth in both rankings, while Taylor Fritz, who challenged Sinner in the last act of the Finals, is sixth by Elo.
The biggest and most welcome surprise in the eyes of Bel Paese fans has to do, however, with Matteo Berrettini. The Roman ended the season at the number 34 spot in the Atp ranking, but according to this calculation system, hear hear, he would even be 13th. Precisely because, precisely, in spite of the points collected and discarded he had a very good season. And the algorithm, evidently, knows it well.
