There’s mail for Berrettini: tears in Malaga

by Lea

Matteo Berrettini, only tears: he said it and he did it.

He was in Malaga a year ago, too. It was not the same, though. The circumstances were completely different from today’s. On that occasion, in fact, Matteo Berrettini was unable to make any factual contribution to the Davis Cup cause, although it is understood that his presence was nonetheless instrumental and invaluable to his colleagues who, instead, played in the blue jersey.

Jannik Sinner had promised him and he was true to his word. He had guaranteed his Roman colleague that the following year they would return to Spain and win, this time together, the second salad bowl. We do not yet know if this will happen, although it is already evident how much the strength of this team can make a difference. Who would have thought, after all, that a pair of singles players could beat an already well-rounded and experienced doubles duo?

No one, indeed. In the face-off against Argentina, however, it was seen that unity is strength and that the Italian national team has an edge. Which, making the necessary averages, gives us hope about the continuation of this adventure, which started in the best way despite the singles match lost by Lorenzo Musetti.

Berrettini, promise kept: he really did it

The great protagonists of this remuntada were Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini, who as a pair in Malaga played an absolutely incredible match.

And if we expected it a little, that the No. 1 could be instrumental for Volandri’s national team, there was a giant question mark about the contribution that the Roman tennis player could offer, for his part. But Matteo amazed everyone once again, playing spectacularly and scoring several decisive points. All while keeping the promise he had made to himself a few hours earlier in the letter he wrote and then read in a clip posted on Fitp’s social channel.

“2024 was the year of restart: you got back into the game and decided to turn over a new leaf – these are the words he addressed to himself – This year you realized that tennis can still give you so much and can make you excited. Now you are here and you are ready to enjoy the moment and this beautiful adventure. No matter what, I am proud of you. I love you, Matteo.” And who knows, he may not experience firsthand those emotions of which, last year, he was only a spectator.
