Romania-Cyprus is a match on the sixth day of the Nations League group stage and is played Monday at 8:45 p.m.: free streaming, likely lineups, prediction.
As expected, Romania proved superior to the selections it was drawn with in League C Group 2 and is now one step away from arithmetic promotion to League B. The verdict, in fact, could have come as early as last Friday but the result of the challenge with Kosovo – a match suspended at 0-0 with a handful of minutes to go due to pro-Serbia chants by some Romanian fans – remains sub iudice pending Uefa’s decision. Mircea Lucescu’s selection, therefore, cannot yet celebrate.
Certainly, a draw would have been enough to win put first place in the safe: Kosovo, at a disadvantage in the direct clashes, had only one result at its disposal to try to join Romania at 12 and then play for everything on the last day. Tricolorii can close games in the match with Cyprus, valid for the sixth and final day. A month ago against the Cypriots it was a match without history: goals by Dragusin, Marin and Man (0-3) gave Lucescu his third success (then became four after the victory in Lithuania) since he took the reins of the Romanian national team, taking over from Edward Iordanescu, who left at the end of the European Championship. Cyprus, victorious Friday against Lithuania — already beaten in the first leg — no longer has any concrete goals: second place is unreachable but Sofronis Avgiusti’s men can no longer finish in last place, even in the event of a defeat in Romania. They will therefore have to settle for a play-off with one of the runners-up in League D to avoid relegation.
