Tennis, there’s Berrettini in Stockholm: predictions Wednesday, Oct. 16

by Mike

Tennis, in the Swedish capital the Roman hammer goes in the hunt for a pass to the round of 16 after a fine win over Darderi. Sonego also on court.

Ending the Asian swing with Jannik Sinner’s triumph in Shanghai, the circuit shifts back to Europe. The final rush on indoor concrete, ahead of the Turin Finals, has already begun. Three Atp 250 tournaments are currently underway: play in Almaty (Kazakhstan), Antwerp (Belgium) and Stockholm (Sweden). The Swedish capital is home to the largest Italian troop. On Monday, Matteo Berrettini and Lorenzo Sonego debuted, victorious over Italian-Argentinian Luciano Darderi and Swiss Marc-Andrea Husler, respectively.

The goal of the Roman hammer, currently 42nd in the rankings, is to be seeded at the next Australian Open but to succeed he will have to accumulate as many points as possible in the appendix of this season. In Stockholm he got off on the right foot, relying on his powerful serve and liquidating his national teammate in two sets (6-4 6-3). Berrettini also starts favored over the Swiss Dominic Stricker, a young tennis player who has so far failed to live up to his promises, slipping out of the top 300. This is a player within Berrettini’s reach, and if he keeps his percentage of firsts high, he will have no problem making it to the round of 16. Sonego, on the other hand, is called to the task against world No. 8 Casper Ruud. The Turin native, who against Husler ended a win fast that had lasted since August, does not seem to be able to overturn the odds against the Norwegian but could easily force a third set.

Wawrinka-Nakashima, generational clash

In Kazakhstan, in Almaty, Croatian Borna Coric is coming off an excellent first round in which he got rid of the hostile Hungarian Marozsan without major problems and could repeat against Canadian Gabriel Diallo.

Victory within reach for German Daniel Altmaier as well: concrete is not his favorite surface but with world number 869, Belgian Gilles Arnaud Bailly, he is likely to debut with a success, redeeming the last defeats he suffered in the Szczecin and Lisbon Challengers. Two potentially hard-fought matches are those between Felix Auger-Aliassime and Marton Fucsovics and between Stan Wawrinka and Brandon Nakashima: a third set cannot be ruled out.
