Premier League, after coming close to victory at City’s ground Arsenal will try to return to success immediately against Leicester.
New season, old standings. In the Premier League, after the first five days, it is still Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City looking down on everyone. The defending champions, however, took a huge risk last Sunday in their big match with Arsenal, who came close to three platinum points at Etihad Stadium. The Gunners, leading 2-1 but down to 10 men from midway through the second half, even managed to hold on until 98′, when a Stones goal prevented them from breaking City’s long home unbeaten streak.
Mikel Arteta’s men, who overwhelmed Bolton in the League Cup (5-1) in the week, are expected to return to winning ways in their challenge with newly promoted Leicester. A match that must not be missed in order not to lose ground to Haaland and his teammates and that anticipates by a few days another very delicate challenge with PSG in the Champions League, also scheduled at the Emirates Stadium.
The Londoners’ victory does not seem to be in question: it is unlikely that the Foxes’ defense, so far always punctured in the league, will be able to hold off the Gunners’ attack. Much more interesting and uncertain is the Stamford Bridge encounter between Chelsea and Brighton: Enzo Maresca’s Blues, after their debut defeat to Manchester City, have not lost since and in the last two days have beaten Bournemouth and West Ham without conceding a goal. The attack may be overperforming (according to xG the Londoners are owed in expected goals) but the conditions for a positive result with the Seagulls are all there. Brighton, moreover, has slowed down a bit after a blazing start, registering three draws in a row with Arsenal, Ipswich and Nottingham.
The predictions on the other matches
One Londoner, on the other hand, who can’t seem to get going is Julen Lopetegui’s West Ham. The Hammers have not won since the end of August and in the week they were swamped with goals by Liverpool in the League Cup (5-1).
There are numerous pitfalls, then, in the derby with Brentford, which should at least avoid defeat in a match of at least one goal each side. There is a good chance that Everton, newly acquired from the Friedkins (same owners as Roma), will also pick up at least a point. The Toffees broke the losing streak with Leicester a week ago and should manage not to lose to Crystal Palace at Goodison Park as well. It gives several cues, finally, the match between Nottingham Forest and Fulham: the Reds are surprisingly still unbeaten and will give life to an enjoyable match with the Londoners, fresh from the nice success with Newcastle.
