Atletico Madrid-Leipzig and Brest-Sturm Graz, Champions League: predictions

by Thorsten

Atletico Madrid-Leipzig and Brest-Sturm Graz are two matches of the first day of the Champions League and they are played on Thursday at 9 p.m.: TV, streaming, probable formations, predictions.

One of the most interesting matches offered on the “menu” of the first day of the new Champions League is staged at the Civitas Metropolitano in Madrid between hosts Atletico and Leipzig.

The Colchoneros at home are shining and are eager to confirm themselves in the international arena as well. Two wins in a row in La Liga for the team of “Cholo” Simeone, who is drawing lifeblood from the signings made in the summer: two of them, Gallagher and Julian Alvarez, found the way of the goal in the last match with Valencia, sunk 3-0 in the Spanish capital (the other goal bears the signature of Griezmann). The red-and-whites are on 11 points, the same as city rivals Real Madrid, and have to make up four lengths to leading Barcelona. Leipzig has also not yet cashed in any defeats: the Roten Bullen are coming off their first draw of the season (0-0 with Union Berlin at the Red Bull Arena), but in the previous two rounds they had beaten Bochum and reigning German champions Bayer Leverkusen, who had come back from 2-0 down to 3-2.

The Prediction

Atletico Madrid is going through a good moment and the new guys have made an impact right from the start. We’re betting on them but it won’t be easy for the Madrid defense to contain Leipzig’s talented attack: there should be no shortage of goals at the Metropolitano.

The probable lineups of Atletico Madrid-Leipzig

ATLETICO MADRID (4-3-3): Oblak; Le Normand, Giménez, Azpilicueta; Llorente, De Paul, Koke, Gallagher, Lino; Griezmann, Álvarez.
LIPSIA (4-2-3-1): Gulácsi; Klostermann, Orbán, Lukeba; Henrichs, Haidara, Kampl, Raum; Šeško, Xavi Simons; Openda.

POSSIBLE RESULT: 3-2

Historic debut for Brest

It may not have the same appeal as other competitions, but for both Brest and Sturm Graz this is a historic debut. It is especially so for the transalpine club, which in its 121-year history had never taken part in a European competition.

The Bretons, led by Eric Roy, qualified directly for the 2024-25 Champions League thanks to an excellent third place in last year’s Ligue 1, in which they scored a whopping 61 points (best ever finish). Repeating will be very difficult, and in Brest they have already sensed it after a less than positive start to the season: in four days they have Del Castillo and his teammates have already cashed in three defeats, beating only newly promoted Saint-Etienne. For Sturm Graz, however, it will not be a first. Between the late 1990s and the dawn of the 00s, the Austrian club participated several times in the group stage of the cup with big ears, but never managed to qualify for the knockout stage. Christian Ilzer’s Bianconeri gained a direct pass thanks to their triumph in the last Austrian Bundesliga, in which they succeeded in the feat of ousting heavily favored Salzburg. The goal is to repeat: with one match to spare, Sturm is currently first in the standings, one point ahead of the Roten Bullen.

The prediction

Brest certainly did not start the season on the right foot, but they have more quality than the Austrians and this could make the difference in a match that in any case promises balance. Sturm Graz, moreover, has not played an official match since last Aug. 31.

The probable lineups of Brest-Sturm Graz

BREST (4-3-3): Bizot; Lala, Le Cardinal, Chardonnet, Amavi; Camara, Fernandes, Magnetti; Del Castillo, Ajorque, Sima.
STURM GRAZ (4-3-2-1): Scherpen; Gazibegović, Aiwu, Wuthrich, Lavalée; Horvat, Stanković, Kiteishvili; Zvonarek, Bøving; Biereth.

POSSIBLE RESULT: 2-1
