US Open, Sabalenka takes on the surprising Navarro while sparks promise between Pegula and Muchova: news and predictions.
In New York, we are in the final stages. Another edition of the US Open is about to go into the archives: on the night of Thursday 5 to Friday 6 the two semifinals of the women’s singles are scheduled. The big favorite is undoubtedly the world No. 2, Aryna Sabalenka, who in the Big Apple could win her third Slam (so far she has put two Australian Opens in her trophy cabinet). The Belarusian tennis powerhouse came close to winning last year, but in the final she surrendered in 3 sets (2-6 6-3 6-2) to home favorite Coco Gauff.
Between her and the last act of the U.S. Open today, there is another U.S. player, in this case the surprising Emma Navarro, who has been making great strides in 2024, coming close to the top 10 for the first time in her career (she is currently 12th, but starting next week will be at least eighth). Navarro has been solid so far, and in the last two rounds she has overturned predictions that she was an underdog, eliminating first defending champion Gauff and then Spain’s Badosa. She has two previous records with Sabalenka.
Last June, on clay, the Minsk native prevailed in two sets, while a few months earlier in Indian Wells, the American prevailed after three hard-fought sets. Is Navarro capable of repeating that feat? In our opinion, no: in California, in fact, it was played on a decidedly slower concrete than in Flushing Meadows, and then Sabalenka was not physically 100 percent. This time it will be very complicated for Navarro to send the Belarusian out of rhythm, but more importantly she will not be able to counter her powerful shots.
Pegula and Muchova facing each other again just a few days apart
In the other semifinal, world No. 6, Jessica Pegula, and No. 52, Karolina Muchova, face off. For the bookies, the favorite is the American, but the Czech with her technique and varied tennis is not to be underestimated.
Pegula just took the scalp of world No. 1 Iga Swiatek, who again showed her limits on concrete. It was not the first time for the American, who had previously gotten the better of the Polish player three times. For the Buffalo player it remains a great summer, since she had already reached the final (then lost to Sabalenka) in the Wta 1000 in Cincinnati. This will be her first Slam semifinal, a milestone that Pegula, 30 in February, had never cut in her career.
Her steadiness, however, could be put to the test by Muchova, who, as in the past edition, has pulled off a pass to the semifinals and is dreaming of her second Slam final after the one played in 2023 at Roland Garros. The Czech, who executed Italy’s Paolini in the round of 16, has yet to lose a single set.
In her only previous match with Pegula, a few weeks ago in Cincinnati, she raised the white flag after 3 sets, which is why we speculate a match with a similar script in New York as well.
