Tsitsipas-Fognini, Atp Gstaad: schedule, live TV, streaming, prediction

by Thorsten

Tsitsipas-Fognini is a quarterfinal match of the Atp 250 tournament in Gstaad: news, analysis, statistics, prediction, live TV and streaming.

The near-final round of 16 at Wimbledon was evidently a pretty clear signal. Fabio Fognini, at 37 years old, is itching to prove that retirement day is not so close. The veteran from Arma di Taggia is also doing very well in Gstaad, Switzerland, that tournament he managed to win in 2017 against Germany’s Yann Hanfmann in the final.

In the first round he won in two sets over Frenchman Droguet. In the second, however, he made a portentous comeback against clay specialist Varillas. After losing the first set fairly sharply, Fognini came out on top in the second at the tie break (3-6 7-6 7-5), thus hijacking the inertia of the match on his side. The 2019 Monte Carlo champion, as is often the case with him, struggles to be consistent, but his wealth of strokes, especially on this surface, allows him to get himself out of trouble.

As of next Monday, whatever the outcome of the Swiss adventure, the Italian would be back in the top 70 of the Atp ranking. Collecting as many as possible is the goal of Fognini, who recently said he no longer wants to try his hand at the Challenger circuit in order to climb up the rankings. His desire is to continue playing at a high level, to compare himself with the best. And the challenge with world No. 12 Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Gstaad quarterfinals comes at just the right time. The Greek is in Switzerland to prepare for the Olympics and in the first round cleared an excellent Medjedovic (7-6 6-3) in two sets. The Athens native represents a real black beast for Fognini, who in four previous matches has barely managed to snatch a single set from him.

Tsitsipas-Fognini: the prediction

The precedents speak for themselves. In the two head-to-head matches on clay (Rome 2019 and Monte Carlo 2022) Fognini has collected only a few games against the Athenian. It is difficult for him to break this taboo against a Tsitsipas who has a different pace on this surface, but the excellent performance offered in recent weeks by the Italian makes one speculate a not one-sided match. The total games could be more than 19.
