Tennis, Berrettini hunting for quarters in Gstaad: predictions Thursday, July 18

Tennis, the Roman hammer after a comfortable win over defending champion Cachin prepares to take on another South American: predictions.

The transition from the beloved grass to the clay of Gstaad was not at all traumatic for Matteo Berrettini, who last Tuesday took little risk against clay-court player Pedro Cachin – defending champion of the Swiss tournament – settled in just two sets (6-4 7-6).

The 28-year-old Roman needs to recover positions in the rankings for the upcoming major engagements – he is currently only 82nd – in order to avoid impractical draws as happened in the last Wimbledon, in which he was forced to face compatriot Sinner already in the second round. For Berrettini there is another South American obstacle, Colombian Daniel Galan, whom he has never faced before. He is an experienced tennis player, especially on the shredded brick, but who has not combined much this season, finishing outside the top 140 in the world (Italian Musetti beat him twice at the Cagliari Challenger and Roland Garros).

In the opener Galan won in two sets over the Czech Kopriva but against such a centered and confident Berrettini he seems to have little chance, which is why we speculate another comfortable victory for the 2021 Wimbledon finalist. In Gstaad today it’s also the turn of world number 18 Felix Auger-Aliassime: the Canadian is no longer what he was a couple of years ago due to injuries but on clay he’s doing quite well and German Yann Hanfmann is not an insurmountable obstacle on this surface.

There’s Norrie for Nadal in Bastad

In the Helvetic tournament, a very balanced challenge on paper between Frenchman Quentin Halys, who arrived in the main draw from the qualifiers, and Slovak Lukas Klein is staged. The transalpine won on his debut over compatriot Gasquet after winning in two tie breaks and could repeat himself over Stan Wawrinka’s executioner in a match that will almost certainly end in the third set.

This week there is also play in Bastad, where the spotlight is all on 22-time Slam champion Rafa Nadal. The Mallorcan is in Sweden to prepare for the Paris Olympics, and in his debut he made a good impression against the son of the art Leo Borg: he will necessarily have to raise his level against Britain’s Cameron Norrie, who will give him a harder time than the Swede. Remaining in Bastad, victory is also within reach for specialist Mariano Navone: the Argentine will most likely rule the Indian Nagal.

In the Atp 500 in Hamburg, another Italian, Flavio Cobolli, is on the scene. The young Roman tennis player, fresh from a very hard-fought success with German Altmaier, will now have to hold his own against the hostile Chinese Zhizhen Zhang. Defending champion Alexander Zverev should tame Frenchman Gaston in two sets, while the challenge between 2004 Frenchman Fils and a clay-court specialist like Serb Djere will likely be more balanced.
