Tennis, after Wimbledon it’s back to clay court play: three tournaments are scheduled in Europe this week.
Ending the brief interlude on grass-actually, no since there is the Newport appendix-it’s back to clay court play on the Atp circuit. No less than three tournaments are on the schedule this week: the Hamburg 500 and the 250 in Bastad and Gstaad. Two Italian nationals are set to make their debut in Germany: Flavio Cobolli and Matteo Arnaldi. For both, two opponents who are within reach but still boast some experience on this surface, Germany’s Daniel Altmaier and Spain’s Pedro Martinez.
The former last year managed to eliminate Sinner from Roland Garros, but since then he hasn’t done much: in any case he plays at home and will have the support of the public, which is why although he is not favored he could easily take Cobolli to the third set. He will also have to be careful Arnaldi, back from a season on grass stingy of satisfaction: the Iberian is less talented but on clay he is a solid player and will need the best version of the Ligurian tennis player to get the better of him. Staying in Hamburg, Germany’s Marterer seems to have a better chance than South Korea’s Kwon, while last year’s finalist Laslo Djere will have to sweat to impose himself on a spirited Zizou Bergs: a third set cannot be ruled out.
There’s Fognini in Gstaad
Although it is “only” a 250, the spotlight is on the Swedish city of Bastad, where Rafa Nadal is scheduled to return tomorrow. Waiting for the Majorcan champion, there is an intriguing challenge between Russia’s Pavel Kotov and Chile’s Cristian Garin, two who are doing quite well on this surface. The South American has been on the wane for some time now but on the red he can surprise the Russian player.
It is also being played in Switzerland, in the Alpine resort of Gstaad. In addition to Matteo Berrettini, on court tomorrow, veteran Italian Fabio Fognini, fresh from an excellent Wimbledon, in which he came close to reaching the round of 16, will try to get past the first round. The Ligurian is always unpredictable but deserves confidence against the fearsome Frenchman Droguet. Former U.S. Open champion Dominic Thiem, who has announced his farewell to tennis – 2024 will be his last year – will try to overturn the odds against Peru’s Varillas, a clay-court doc but in crisis for some time. He should advance without major problems the young Serbian talent Medjedovic, engaged against host Huesler, who recently plummeted in the rankings.
