Serbia-England, Southgate’s national team also debuts: the English are among the main favorites for the final victory.
Will England be able to bear the burden of the status of the main favorite to win Euro 2024? Good question. History, meanwhile, tells us that the English have almost always failed expectations. Even more so when these were very high, just like now.
Whether they will be able to break a fast that dates back to the 1960s remains to be seen. Of course, it is a fact that, at the level of Gareth Southgate’s selection in the European Championship that has just opened, there is only Mbappé’s France, the reigning vice world champions. No one can afford, for example, an attack composed of the likes of Kane, Saka, Bellingham and Foden. All absolute stars in their respective leagues (Kane golden shoe, Bellingham and Foden best players in La Liga and Premier League respectively). But soccer, it is known, is not a perfect science. Names are not enough to bring home titles, and Italy’s victory at Euro 2021 is the clearest proof of that. England, in any case, has all the cards to finish ahead of everyone in its group, which also consists of Denmark, Serbia and Slovenia. The Three Lions national team will make its debut in Gelsenkirchen with Dragan Stojkovic’s troop, which is returning to a European Championship 24 years after the last time.
Serbia is another team that has plenty of talent, especially from the midfield up, but rarely manages to express it fully. Vlahovic and his teammates would have everything to make their way to Germany, but to do so they will have to make that long-overdue leap in quality, especially at the group level.
Serbia-England, Kane is a judgment
With England we are on the safe side. Harry Kane may be considered a “menagerie”-even in Monaco, the English center forward failed to win titles-but he scores plenty of goals.
E should be able to pierce Serbia’s less than solid rearguard as well. Dangers, for the Serbs, will also come from the right, where Saka will act. The Arsenal striker in the national shirt is always one of the most inspired, and from him we expect at least one shot in the goal mirror. One of the biggest nightmares of the English defense-not equal to the attack-is striker Mitrovic, who is slightly favored in the ballot with Juventus’ Vlahovic, but former Lazio player Milinkovic-Savic will certainly show up in Pickford’s sides as well. Among the possible marksmen also teases the name of Alexander-Arnold, who can also be devastating in ball possession: the Liverpool player could provide at least one assist as well. Serbs Lukic and Pavlovic are at risk of yellow – also watch out for the purple Milenkovic – while in England the number one suspect is Guéhi.
