Roland Garros, women’s draw: news and predictions Wednesday, May 29

by Mark

Roland Garros, women’s draw: in the evening it is the turn of number one Swiatek, who will face another Slam champion, Japan’s Osaka.

The highlight match of this second round is undoubtedly the one pitting world number one Iga Swiatek, a three-time champion in Paris, against Naomi Osaka, who has won four Slams in her career (none at Roland Garros).

The Japanese player, after the long stop due to pregnancy, is struggling to regain the form of a few years ago and in the first round she took a big risk against Lucia Bronzetti of Italy, getting away in three sets and after two intense hours of play. Unlikely, then, that she will be able to give a hard time to the one who is now the undisputed queen of the Parisian major. In the opener, Swiatek filed the Jeanjean file in just an hour leaving her opponent with barely three games. Another clear victory against Osaka is to be expected, but compared to the Frenchwoman, she should be able to make herself more dangerous by scraping together a few more games. Spotlight also on Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto, who made an impression in her debut by beating world number 14 Haddad Maia in three sets. A sensational performance by the Marche player and it is not too surprising that bookmakers consider her a slight favorite against Spain’s Cristina Bucsa.

Jabeur on velvet?

Tunisian Ons Jabeur, number 9 in the Wta rankings, was almost perfect in the first round against American Vickery. While she has never found great continuity in this 2024, a fairly clear success should also come against Colombian Osorio, a player who is struggling to make that long-awaited leap in quality.

A tricky opponent instead for Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko, winner in Paris in 2017. The Baltic tennis player will have to deal with Danish Clara Tauson, who appeared to be on the rise in the last period (in the first round she took out veteran Maria in two sets) but in the end she should be able to rule her thanks to her “unscrupulous” and above all “unreasoned” tennis. An enthralling challenge between Donna Vekic and Marta Kostyuk: the Ukrainian played a nice rematch against Brazilian Pigossi in the opener and her athleticism will certainly make the difference. Russian Samsonova is also a favorite: the American Anisimova has not yet regained her pre-injury form. Finally, the matches between Sofia Kenin and Caroline Garcia and Danielle Collins and Olga Danilovic could turn out to be closer than expected.
