With the success snatched last Saturday in Slovakia (0-2), Ralf Rangnick’s Austria recorded its fourth consecutive victory after wins over Azerbaijan and Estonia (European qualifiers) and Germany (friendly). Four wins but also four clean sheets in a row, demonstrating improvements in both phases of the game. In short, the former Leipzig and Manchester United coach can be satisfied.
In Slovakia it was Weimann and Baumgartner who decided the match, two who will almost certainly be on the call-up list for the upcoming German European Championship. Austria secured a pass for the continental event – their second consecutive participation after Euro 2020, in which Das Team’s run stopped in the round of 16 against Italy – thanks to second place in Group F behind Belgium. The former Fiorentina and AC Milan coach was one of the main architects of qualification for the European Championship, won thanks to first place in Group G, ahead of the much better-ranked Croatia. To do well in June, however, it will be necessary to regain the spirit of last fall, of which there was no trace in the last friendly against Hungary, lost 1-0 in Budapest last Friday.
