For the nineteenth time in their careers Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev will cross each other’s racquets. For the first, however, they will do so in a Grand Slam tournament: strange but true, the Russian and the German (but Russian-born) have never faced each other in one of the four most important events of the tennis season.
The stakes this time are very high indeed: whoever wins will face off in the final against one of Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner, who will play each other a few hours earlier. For Medvedev it would be his third appearance in the final act in Melbourne. He has come close to the title in Australia twice, the first time in 2021 and the second time in 2022, surrendering to two holy monsters like Djokovic and Nadal, respectively. Zverev, on the other hand, has never reached the final at the Australian Open, returning to the top four at the Happy Slam after four years. Just before the outbreak of the pandemic, the Hamburg native raised the flag ahead of Dominic Thiem.

The Muscovite was not flawless on his way to the semifinals: only against the Canadian Auger-Aliassime did he manage to come out on top in three sets.
What a struggle instead against Finland’s Ruusuvuori in the second round, after coming within a hair’s breadth of the lead. Medvedev also had to resort to the fifth set in the quarterfinals against Poland’s Hurkacz, folded after four hours. Also strewn with obstacles was the road the German took, twice making it to the fifth set, against Slovak Klein and then with Britain’s Norrie. Zverev’s big showdown, however, was against world number two Alcaraz in the quarters: unplayable in the first two sets, Sascha risked “bringing the Spaniard back to life” in the third but then managed to close it out like a great champion.
Medvedev-Zverev: the prediction
Eighteen victories for Medvedev, only seven for Zverev. The precedents speak for themselves and especially the most recent ones, with Medvedev getting the better of the German five times out of six in 2023, winning only in Cincinnati. The Russian will once again start with the favor of prediction this time but if Zverev should repeat the performance he offered against Alcaraz (85% of prime) we are expecting a very balanced match indeed, from at least 4 sets.
