Sinner, far from a walk in the park: it’s all more complicated than expected and his difficulties are objective.
That he is special is for all to see. Not only on a sporting level, although it is undeniable that he has a unique talent that has allowed him, not surprisingly, to take fourth place in the world rankings. It is also so from a purely human point of view, as he is very different from many other faces on the tennis scene.
Like Jannik Sinner, and there are many who support him, there is no one. It might sound biased for his athletic trainer to say that, but it’s not. Because anyone who has known him or met him along the way has been surprised, precisely, by his dedication and genuineness. The two characteristics that, combined with the determination that connotes him, have made him stand out on the major circuit. Part of the credit for this feat goes, of course, to him, to Umberto Ferrara, who is preparing him in Alicante and who, in an interview with Studio Aperto Mag, revealed many unknown aspects of the San Candido native’s rise.
“Jannik – these are the words of his athletic trainer – in addition to being a tennis player of the highest level, and this is under everyone’s eyes, he is as first thing a special guy. Honestly without wanting to make comparisons with all the tennis players I have coached he is really something different. A dedication to work, a simplicity and a very honest approach to things in life. It is a pleasure to be with him even outside of tennis. “
Sinner, far from a walk: it was a sweat
When Ferrara started working with him, Sinner was not yet the undisputed champion he is today. He was good, very good, but still “immature.” With obvious limitations that needed to be worked on from the very beginning.
“When I started working with him,” he recounted, “I found a guy who was used to training but who probably because of scheduling choices had arrived from a physical point of view a little bit in trouble, and this was my opportunity. They called me precisely to try to go in a certain direction that was not the one followed before, this is not to criticize those who were there before me. It was difficult for me because there was so much work to be done, but also easy because I found a guy, an athlete and a person who was aware of the work that there was to be done and that there is still to be done.”
Anyone who thinks it was a piece of cake and that talent alone is enough to become No. 1 is wrong. Big time.
