Everton-Burnley is a match valid for the fourth round of the League Cup and is played Wednesday at 8:45 p.m.: stats, likely lineups and predictions.
On Sunday Everton made a splash at London Stadium, the home of West Ham, beaten 1-0 thanks to a goal by striker Calvert-Lewin. It was a victory with no small specific weight because it came against a team with a European dimension and because, above all, it allowed Sean Dyche to make a big leap in the standings, moving up to +5 on the relegation zone.
Quickly disposing of the dross left by the derby defeat to Liverpool at Anfield: for the Toffees it was their second success in the last three league days, their third away win of the season after a 3-1 win at Brentford and a 2-1 win in Birmingham with Aston Villa in the previous League Cup round. The former Burnley coach, who will reunite with his old team in the League Cup, can be satisfied with how things are going under his management: after last year’s photo-finish salvation, the goal this time is to be able to keep the category ahead of the last two seasons, while also taking some satisfaction.
Making their way into one of the two domestic cups could, for example, become intriguing: it has been 28 years since the Toffees won a trophy, and the last time they played in the League Cup final was in 1984.
The League Cup is not the priority instead for Burnley, struggling as much as the other newcomers. Coach Vincent Kompany’s proactive play, which allowed them to dominate the Championship league last year, is proving to be a boomerang for now: on Saturday, the Clarets lost their direct clash with Bournemouth due to a defensive mix-up. One win, one draw and as many as eight defeats for Burnley, which cannot shake off second-last place in the standings.
The Prediction
Everton is doing better away than at home this year, while Burnley’s only positive results have been away from their home crowd. This does not mean that the Clarets will get past the round but that, also because of the numerous rotations by both coaches, the one at Goodison Park could be a very balanced match, with at least one goal on each side. A draw in regulation time cannot be ruled out.
