Christian Streich’s men, who were eliminated in the last edition in the round of 16 by Juventus, debuted with a heavyweight victory in Piraeus (2-3), but on the second day they were unable to avoid defeat with West Ham (1-2).
In the Bundesliga, Freiburg got right back on track after the drubbing with Bayern Munich before the break, bending Bochum 2-1 thanks to a penalty scored by Grifo late in the first half.
