Until a couple of seasons ago the top goal of these two teams was salvation. Within a short time everything has changed: Saudi petrodollars have brought Newcastle back to the levels of the 1990s, when a certain Alan Shearer wore the black and white jersey, while Brighton to fight with the big names for a place in Europe has arrived there through ideas and planning, but above all by betting on capable coaches.
On the Seagulls’ bench for almost a year now sits Roberto De Zerbi: that’s all it took for the former Sassuolo coach to be appreciated even in the Premier League, to the point that many believe he is ready for the leap to a top club. His Brighton side, which will take part in a European competition, the Europa League, for the first time this year, got off to a strong start despite major disposals – the most costly were those of Mac Allister and Caicedo – beating Luton Town and Wolverhampton, to whom they rifled a total of eight goals, justifying the friendly nickname “De Zerbi-ball.” Dunk and his teammates, however, immediately came back down to earth after their defeat to West Ham, remedied at the Amex Stadium a week ago. The Hammers, despite 22 percent ball possession, were more cynical in goal, giving the Seagulls their first disappointment (1-3) of the season. Two defeats in a row, on the other hand, for Newcastle, which surrendered narrowly to Man City and Liverpool.

The Eddie Howe-coached team in any case can reproach itself very little. The calendar has put them up against two battleships and a respectable opponent like Aston Villa.

After the bombastic victory with the Villans, scrambled 5-1 at St. James’ Park, Newcastle had to deal with the Citizens and Reds: it did not come out downsized – with both of them it lost by a narrow margin – but it confirmed the difficulties that emerged already last year against the big boys. Both Howe and De Zerbi – from the market, for the Italian coach, Ansu Fati arrived – have to do without important pawns such as Botman (Newcastle) and Enciso (Brighton).
